Keep Harare Clean

In order to fulfill its vision of " safe, clean and healthy environment supporting an empowered society and a growing economy" the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) works in partnership with stakeholders who are involved in waste management initiatives. The stakeholders include: Community Based Organisations (CBOs), Litter mornitors, Waste Management Commitees and Local Authorities. Of late, Churches, schools, tertiary institutions and youth groups have also come on board, taking up waste management initiatives.  Local Authorities have not been left out on these waste management initiatives; the City of Harare is an example of one such Local Autority that has embarked on a clean up campaignn running under the theme 'Keep Harare Clean'.

Keep Harare Clean Project

The City of Harare in conjunction with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA)  and the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) other partners have  intensified the Keep Harare Clean Project, an environmental campaign that inspires and empowers communities around the capital  to clean up, maintain and conserve their environment. The programme is under the City’s Environmental Recovery Plan adopted to ensure a sustainable clean city.

 What is a fireguard?

It is a belt of not less than 9 metres that is cleared of all inflammable materials in order to control the spread of veld fires. Fireguards are essential for protecting and safeguarding veldts, property and lives of various living organisms including human beings. However, many land users or property owners do not prioritize the construction of fireguards. It is a strict statutory requirement that any land user or property owner should put in place fire prevention mechanisms and one of them is the construction of standard fireguards.

A standard fireguard should measure at least 9 metres wide and must be free from any flammable material.

Call for masters research proposals 2018


In response to the current imperative by the New Government towards linking research and development, the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Climate, has taken this initiative to engage local universities in environmental research. The Agency is mandated to regulate, monitor and promote sustainable management of natural resources and the protection of the environment with stakeholder participation. The Environmental Management Agency is a statutory body responsible for ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources and protection of the environment, the prevention of pollution and environmental degradation, the preparation of Environmental Plans for the management and protection of the environment. It was established under the Environmental Management Act [Chapter 20:27] and operationalised on the 17th of March 2003 through SI 103 of 2003.
