Veld fire management has been one of the topical environmental issues affecting the nation over the past decade. Each year, millions of hactares of forest and grassland are destroyed by veld fires. The impacts of these fires include loss of biodiversity, air pollution, greenhouse gas emission as well as loss of life and property. From 2010 to date, more than 100 lives have been lost in inferno.
As a response to this, the second week of May has been set aside as the National Fire Awareness Week, during which anti-veld fire awareness activities are intensified across the country especially in the fire prone areas.
